Basic Machine Tools Based on Various Machining Operations

Basic machining operations comprise turning, drilling, reaming, boring, facing, milling, broaching, grinding, lapping, and honing. Turning Macine Turning machine or Lathe is the mother of all machine tools. With some ingenuity most of the machining operations can be carried out on lathe. 1. Center Lathe The center lathe [Fig. 1.1] has been in use for over 200 years now. A general purpose machine, it comprises a bed with a guideway. On one end of the bed is mounted the headstock, which provides drive to the spindle mounted with a work-holder. The other end is mounted with a tailstock [Fig. 1.2] which supports longer workpieces on the…

Center Lathe Machine Craft, Design & Processes

The centre lathe or metal turning lathe is a machine used to turn metal or plastic bar into cylindrical shapes. In addition there are my other operations that can be done on this type of lathe. The work, which usually rotates towards the operator, can be griped securely in a chuck, bolted to a face plate or set up between two centres. The cutting tool, mounted on a tool post on the top of the carriage can be moved along the bed or at right angles to it. The length ways movement (or traverse) of the cutting tool produces a…

Lathe Anatomy in Details

Lathes come in all makes and sizes, from bench top models to industrial heavyweights, but the basic design is the same on all lathes. A rigid bed supports a stationary headstock and a tailstock that can be moved to accommodate wood blanks of various lengths. A motor turns a spindle mounted in the headstock, which in turn drives the work. The illustration on the facing page shows a composite wood turning lathe combining the features of many lathes. I call this lathe “Everylathe” because there is probably no lathe that would have all of the features shown-at least at an…
